Brain tumor recovery is unique to each patient. The amount of hospitalization will depend on the patient's tolerance of pain as well as the overall outcome of the surgery. There is no way to know this until it happens. Nevertheless, understanding the process of removal of a brain tumor and how you will feel, it can help you to know what is happening within your body. Since each patient is so unique, though, it becomes very important for you to consider your case individually. Your doctor can help tell you about your own likelihood of recovery time. ExpectationsYour brain surgery recovery starts with a successful surgery. Removing the brain tumor is an important part to overcoming the condition. The ability of doctors to get the entire tumor out is very important. Secondly, they must be able to remove as much of the infected tissue, if any, from the brain. This procedure is more difficult in some patients than others. Once this is done, within one to two weeks after the removal surgery many patients will need brain tumor chemotherapy to help kill any of the existing brain tumor cells that could be multiplying in the tissue. Most patients will receive this chemotherapy as an outpatient procedure though. While the causes of brain tumor happenings are not known, most often doctors are able to pinpoint the ability to remove the brain tumor successfully. When they can remove it successfully, most patients will remain in the hospital for several days. Most often this is three to four days after the operation happens for those that have a tumor removed in the upper section of the brain. For those that have a tumor removed from the lower section of the brain, recover after the brain tumor may be longer by one to two additional days. One of the key things that doctors want to see in patients is their ability to get back to life as soon as possible. Since most will no longer have symptoms of brain tumors, they will be more likely to perform at their normal level, assuming no or little damage was done. Additionally, they need to get back in the habit of doing the things they are used to doing. By stimulating the brain, it can heal faster and better. Therefore, many times, in a good surgery situation, doctors recommend getting back to work within a few weeks of having the brain surgery. Each person is going to be different, though. For those who will have surgery to remove brain tumors in children, the expectations are also a wait and see game. Doctors often keep patients in the hospital long enough to fully understand what is happening with symptoms, motor skills and speech skills. By monitoring the child, they can determine if the surgery has been a success of if there is the need for additional treatments. Testing is also done to insure that the procedure was successful. This procedure will often take some time to happen, but is usually done within the hospital or as outpatient testing after you are discharged. Understanding, that brain tumor recovery takes time is important. It often is dependent on the condition of the patient at the time they get the surgery too and their willingness to overcome their brain tumor. If there are additional complications, or if additional surgeries need to be complete, there is a good chance that the patient will also stay in the hospital longer and their brain tumor recovery will take longer. Nevertheless, many that have a brain tumor will recover well and even quickly from their condition and all the symptoms associated with brain tumors. |
